Treatment of Drug and Alcohol Abuse and Addiction
Soul and Mind

Rehab and detox centers can help a lot to treat drug and alcohol addictions

Drug and alcohol abuse and addiction can be treated once and forever and there are many approaches to it. Treatment options vary from consultations with a psychologist, to special medication programs, to rehab and detox centers. Some doctors approach the problem as a medical one, while others treat it as a social choice and depending on their approach, different treatment measures are undertaken. One of the most difficult aspects of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction treatment is that permanent results can be achieved only with the cooperation and the strong will of the patient.

If There is a Will, There is a Way

Certainly, this proverb was not coined because of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction treatment but it fits perfectly into the philosophy of treatment. Good will to start and the strong will not to give up are two of the most important prerequisites for the successful drug and alcohol abuse and addiction treatment. What is more, when there is no will to be treated, any treatment will meet resistance and the effect will be counterproductive. And if the patient still does not admit that he or she is dependent on drugs or alcohol, using force to make them quit is usually a motive for them to drink even more. Well, this does not mean that drug and alcohol abusers and addicts must be left on their own and do what pleases them. Rather, this means that treatment goes along a different route for those who are willing and for those who are forced to.

Even if an abuser or an addict is willing to get clean, this might not be possible right away. Very often several courses of treatment and a couple of years are necessary for a former abuser or addict to cut completely the bonds with his or her past. In many cases drug and alcohol abuse and addiction treatment is not successful without change in the environment, namely getting rid of “friends” and acquaintances who encourage drinking and drug use. Breaking with the past is not easy but one of the easier ways to do it is by going to rehab and detox centers.

Rehab and Detox Centers

Rehab and detox centers are considered the most effective way for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction treatment because the environment there is very suitable for breaking with the past. When people meet other guys and girls, who also strive to break free from their dependency and when there is qualified medical personnel around, it is easier to get clean and stay like that. The pains of abstinence are relieved through medication and therapy. Additionally, when you see that this is the way to go and that everybody around you is going in the same direction, your motivation is increased.

However, stay in rehabs and detox centers is not cheap. There are rehab and detox centers that are under $10,000 per 30-day course, which includes therapy, accommodation, food, etc. Well, rehab and detox centers are not resorts and you don't go there on vacation but very often a visit to a detox or rehab center provides some kind of entertainment. There is nothing wrong to enjoy your visit there, though if it were up to you, you would hardly have chosen exactly this destination for vacation.

While you are in rehab, you might have a dieting and exercise program as well. If you have lost your good shape many years ago because drugs and booze have taken its toll, you might also like the idea of getting fit again. The only thing you should feel about rehab and detox centers is hatred and disgust. If you accept your stay there as a punishment, rather than a useful torture, do not expect any positive long-term results.
